Protecting and Educating Children

“I believe the County of Los Angeles has many responsibilities to provide services to the community. However, there is no greater responsibility than protecting our children and making sure they have the opportunity to succeed.”

Defending the Most Vulnerable
Several County departments are at the front-lines of delivering care, resources and support for at-risk children. Hilda believes in supporting the needs of our foster care system, so that social workers have the resources they need to ensure no child falls through the cracks. She is committed to the implementation of the recommendations of the Blue Ribbon Commission including but not limited to the implementation of accountability measures, with a special focus on cases with children under the age of five.

Fighting for Early Childhood Education
Hilda Solis supports Head Start and believes programs that provide children and families with comprehensive, high quality educational services should be supported. She has actively fought against proposals to dismantle Head Start and cut early childhood education programs.

Supporting the Inter-Agency Council on Child Abuse and Neglect (ICAN)
ICAN was established in 1977 by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors as the official county agency to coordinate the development of services for the prevention, identification and treatment of child abuse and neglect. Hilda Solis stands ready to support the ICAN vision that all children deserve to live in a safe and nurturing home free from abuse, neglect or exploitation. She also supports a proactive approach to interagency communication, so that all agencies can effectively protect the County’s children.

Promoting Access to Higher Education
From organizing college fairs and workshops for high school students, to fighting for grant money for local colleges, Hilda has a strong track record of supporting access to higher education and has served on the Rio Hondo Community College Board of Trustees.
